Position Focus:

This position calls for a highly skilled and detail-oriented graphic designer with expertise in pre-press processes as well as print and digital design. Must have a passion for delivering exceptional design in a fast-paced environment, ensuring top-quality standards for every project. Possessing a comprehensive understanding of design principles, typography, color theory, and layout, this position seamlessly translates client requirements into visual design that captivates and communicates effectively for higher education. The position will also require solid skills in both single and multiple-page design, plus a complete understanding of brand and brand guidelines. The designer must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft products and will expertly execute pre-press tasks, data merges, file preparation, image retouching, color correction, and imposition, resulting in accurate print production. With exceptional organizational and time management skills, the position will need to regularly multitask between clients, prioritize deadlines, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver projects on time and within budget. With a strong eye for detail and a commitment to innovation, the YPPS team is dedicated to exceeding client expectations and contributing to the success of Yale University.

Essential Duties

1. Provides alternative designs to clients and information on techniques of production, paper and ink colors, project specifications, graphic content, and media requirements. Designs, edits, proofreads, prepares layouts and formats printed materials including publications, brochures, flyers, newsletters, banners, display panels and charts, utilizing appropriate equipment and/or software. Makes stylistic structural, factual and grammatical corrections. 2. Orders licensed materials. Maintains, modifies and updates and existing website utilizing an editor or HTML. Keeps website current, determines sources of and compiles information for updates and input. Assists in website design, editing, and developing content of site. Identifies, evaluates and solves website problems. 3. Tests and evaluates web pages for accuracy and functionality. Updates links as needed. Researches, evaluates and selects internal/external printers as appropriate. Develops cost estimates, printing specifications and schedules. Carries projects through to completion. 4. Coordinates price quotes, proof viewing, and production schedules. Ensures print deadlines are met and finished project complies with job request. 5. Develops internal departmental procedures and standards to ensure consistency with University website and desktop publishing guidelines. 6. Writes copy and captions for departments, schools and university publications and websites. Investigates, tests, evaluates, and recommends technological upgrades, software and equipment. 7. Scans material. Maintains image quality and resolution. Corrects digital scans for color, contrast and density. Uses software to enhance, manipulate, resize, or retouch digital files for publication. Establishes and maintains paper and database files of past materials, illustrations, graphics and contacts. 8. Performs related administrative duties such as training, overseeing support staff, coordinating unit publications, billing/accounting functions and creating pricing lists.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Demonstrated history of reliable work attendance, and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment under pressure of deadlines.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to understand complex written and verbal instructions, completing work as instructed on a job ticket.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Creative mindset and a keen eye for aesthetics. Ability to conceptualize and develop visually appealing designs that effectively communicate client messages.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Strong communication skills to understand internal and external client requirements, convey ideas effectively, and work harmoniously with others in the design process.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

A solid understanding of digital and print design and their production processes. This includes knowledge of print specifications, color modes, paper types, file formats, and the ability to prepare print-ready files using Adobe Creative Suite.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Bachelor degree in a related field, Associate degree with four years of related work experience, or six years of related work experience.
