Job Description

Brief summary of role:

OpenSpace develops cutting-edge software that enables builders to effortlessly capture, visualize, and understand their job sites. Our core backend team powers the essential services behind OpenSpace, including APIs, distributed data handling, and AI-powered video processing pipelines. As a rapidly scaling startup, we continuously evolve our infrastructure to deliver new features while maintaining reliability and excellent customer experience. We are in search of a Senior Backend Engineer. This is a foundational role with broad impact: you will contribute to active software development while also shaping team culture, establishing processes, and mentoring future hires. You will collaborate directly with our US-based teams to drive product success and long-term platform scalability.

What you'll be doing:

  • Establish effective collaboration with US-based engineering and product teams.
  • Take ownership of key projects and proactively drive them to completion.
  • Rapidly learn and integrate with new software APIs.
  • Communicate clearly in English through both verbal discussions and written documentation.
  • Develop robust, scalable software with attention to performance, security, privacy, and fault tolerance.
  • Efficiently debug complex systems and troubleshoot production issues.
  • Provide accurate estimates, manage priorities, and deliver on deadlines.

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum 5 years of professional software development experience.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing APIs, especially REST APIs.
  • Strong programming skills in Java and/or Kotlin.
  • Proficiency in relational data modeling with PostgreSQL and seamless backend API integration.
  • Practical experience with cloud computing platforms, preferably AWS.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Experience working in international, distributed teams, particularly with US-based colleagues.

Work Style and Expectations

  • Adaptability to work analytically and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • A mindset focused on automation and continuous process improvements for scalability.
  • Proactive identification of issues with independently proposed solutions.
  • Comfort operating autonomously with minimal supervision across multiple projects.
  • Growth-oriented, motivated by dynamic learning opportunities.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to process large data volumes quickly and accurately, with thorough self-review of work.

Engagement & Contract Terms

  • This position is offered as a contractor role under a Polish B2B (business-to-business) agreement , fully compliant with Polish civil law.
  • This is not an employment contract. The contractor is responsible for their own tax, social security (ZUS), and other statutory contributions in Poland.
  • The contract is for a fixed term of 24 months , with the possibility of extension or conversion based on business needs and mutual agreement.
  • Compensation will be paid based on monthly invoices, with standard payment terms (Net 30).
  • The role is fully remote , with flexible working hours focused on agreed deliverables and outcomes.
  • The contractor is responsible for managing their own work schedule to meet project goals.
  • No employee benefits (paid leave, sick leave, health insurance, pension contributions) are provided by OpenSpace; all such obligations rest with the contractor.
  • Expected commitment is approximately full-time (about 40 hours/week), with scheduling flexibility.
