Primary Role

Operates and controls plant machinery and equipment for wastewater treatment. Remotely controls distribution pumps, tanks, and equipment to maintain water and fire service in the distribution system. Monitors and tests wastewater quality to ensure safe guidelines.

Job Duties

• Monitors SCADA to operate and control electric motors, pumps, valves, and filters to regulate flow of drinking wastewater through the plant.

• Monitors SCADA to remotely adjust and control pumps, motors, and chemical feed equipment to regulate pressures, water elevations, flow of water, and quality of wastewater

• Dumps specified amount of chemicals, such as polymer, salt, and potassium permanganate into chemical feeders.

• Makes adjustments to chemical feeders to control the amount of chemical admitted into tanks, clearwells, and pipelines to disinfect, deodorize, clarify, and purify the wastewater.

• Maintaining tools and equipment and notifying supervisor of broken equipment or tools and safety needs or equipment

• Controls, operates, and monitors mixers, vacuum pumps, sludge blanket levels, sludge blanket concentrations and sludge removal to clarify the wastewater. Monitors SCADA to remotely adjust and control pumps, motors, and chemical feed equipment, to regulate pressures, water elevations, flow of water, and quality of water.

• Monitors filter operation to maintain quality and determine backwashing scheduling. Collects and tests water samples from various process points to determine acidity, color, turbidity, pH, bacteria content, treatment application, odor, and other impurities, using various laboratory equipment such as electrodes, colorimeters, mixers, turbidimeters, titrators, mixers and hot plates.

• Operate sewer cleaning equipment to repair sewer back up

• Completes E-Coli testing

• Complete locates and manhole inspections in their assigned areas

• Maintains and tests online analytical instruments monitoring quality.

• Records data such as test results, chemical dosages, weights, and volumes, water quality information, operational problems, and compliance monitoring as required by various State and Federal regulations.

• Loads /unloads/receives chemicals and materials used to purify and operate the wastewater treatment systems. Housekeeping of the plants, grounds and vehicles

• Make necessary adjustments and repairs to plants and equipment as needed.

• Plant daily checklist and monthly facility inspections.

• Rotation of on-call responsibilities

• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL Class A license preferred
  • Missouri Wastewater Treatment class C license required. Will consider lesser license but position will be as an Operator in Training until license obtained.

Qualifications

The person occupying this position must be neat, reliable, resourceful, have a retentive memory, and be able to think and act promptly. The Operator’s personality must allow this individual to fully cooperate with and assist other employees. The Operator must be able to work effectively under pressure; must have good habits of speech, legible handwriting, have basic computer skills, and the technical, academic, and physical ability to perform the duties of this classification; must be able to readily read, understand, and accurately follow station operating instructions given by supervision. The Operator must be able to discern between the relative importance of assigned duties; must have the proper regard for the use of time and equipment, and an awareness of the responsibility to safeguard the water supply; must be able to send and receive instructions by radio, phone, and computer.

 

Assigned classification will be based on licenses possessed. To be eligible for Operator-in-Training Classification, the person must possess or working toward an Operator Class D Wastewater license To be eligible for Operator C Classification, you must possess an Operator Class C Wastewater license To be eligible for Operator A Classification, you must possess an Operator Class A Wastewater license
